By LAURA ELDER The Daily News –

Center piece: As promised, Friendswood attorney and developer Jerome Karam has added 135,000 square feet to JMK5 Holdings‘ growing commercial real estate portfolio.

Karam late last month finalized acquisition of the Mainland Crossing shopping center, 9300 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway in Texas City, with big plans to renovate and refresh it.

Plans to revive the commercial center are big buzz for Texas City.

Mainland Crossing sustained a blow in 2008 when anchor Hobby Lobby, a crafts retailer, closed its Texas City store and opened one in League City’s Victory Lakes Town Center, Interstate 45 and FM 646.

The shopping center counts among its tenants The Optometry Group and Luna’s Mexican Restaurant, among others. Only about 35,000 square feet of the center is occupied by tenants. But that soon will change.

Already, JMK5 has secured three major tenants for Mainland Crossing. Booker T’s World Gym Arena will move from Mainland City Centre, 10000 Emmett F. Lowry Expressway, to Mainland Crossing. Booker T’s was seeking more space, Karam said. The University of Texas Medical Branch also has signed a letter of intent to lease 10,500 square feet in the center, but more details weren’t immediately available.
